Kyiv Biennial
Kyiv Biennial is an international forum for art, knowledge, and politics that integrates exhibitions and discussion platforms. It adopts an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of the humanities, socially engaged art, and political activism in order to reflect on the crucial issues of the contemporary world. Kyiv Biennial is organized by the Visual Culture Research Center.
During the critical 2022–2025 period, the Kyiv Biennial shifted from a city-specific event to a transnational infrastructure for cultural resistance, demonstrating expertise in managing art under conditions of war and displacement.
Since the first days of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Kyiv Biennial has launched the Emergency Support Initiative for the members of the artistic and cultural community in Ukraine finding themselves in need. In 2022, our main goal was to support people remaining in the country and to provide them with immediate financial relief under the conditions of occupation and/or relocation.
In 2023, the Kyiv Biennial launched its 5th edition as a "nomadic" biennial. Spanning Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Uzhhorod, Berlin, Warsaw, Lublin, Antwerp, and Vienna, this edition successfully reintegrated the scattered Ukrainian artistic community with European partners through a decentralized model.
The 6th Edition "Near East, Far West" established a consortium with the L’Internationale, a European confederation of museums, arts organizations and universities, co-organizing exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN) and M HKA (Antwerp) with a spin-off exhibition at Lentos Museum (Linz). This initiative redefined "Middle-East-Europe"concept as a strategic site for the future of the European project, moving beyond the old periphery narrative.
At the same time, the Biennial maintained vital operations within Ukraine, presenting research-based projects and archival exhibitions at the Dovzhenko Centre in Kyiv, Asortymentna Kimanata in Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture in Dnipro. In doing so, it ensured that local audiences remained actively connected to a broader pan-European programme, even under wartime conditions.
